When following the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama to return home from India, the supply ship "Rebirth" lost contact in the area around Kilwa. At first, the pilot thought that the "Rebirth" was probably affected by the storm and sailed eastward, and since the crew of it had the accurate nautical chart, they might bypass Toamasina and rejoin them in Portugal. It was therefore decided that the fleet should keep on sailing. But they never saw the "Rebirth" again.
