Salin's father was an employee of the East India Company, and her mother was a local. An untimely love made her parents ostracized by the world. Shalin had wandered in this land with her parents since she was born. Every evening, her father would play the lute for the mother and daughter by the bonfire. The stars and the sweet music were all her memories of her parents.
After her parents died of illness, Shalin wandered alone for many years. Until one day, she accidentally pushed open the door of a tavern, and saw people with different skin colors and different costumes gathered together, drinking and dancing. This scene awakened her childhood memories, she looked at everyone and said:
"I can play the lute, can I join you?"
