Years later, standing here on the streets of Calicut, I can still remember that distant afternoon when I saw Meena for the first time.
I was a little-known merchant at the time who traveled everywhere to make money. After a long voyage of many months, I walked out of the dark, stinky cabin and set foot on the broad, solid ground for the first time.
The streets of Calicut were covered with colorful fabrics, and colored powders were sold in front of the street shops. Before I was fully awake, a nice-smelling girl suddenly ran past me, her fingers quickly brushing my unshaven face, leaving a soft feeling.
I watched myself follow her and run wildly, passing the surrounding scenery quickly, which leaves me colorful afterimages. She stopped where the crowd was the thickest, smiled playfully at me, took a handful of red powder from her pocket, and threw it into the air.
"Happy Holi!" I heard her say.
"Happy Holi!" The people said that along with her.
The people on the street danced cheerfully without accompaniment or rhythm.
I stood at the side, didn't know how to react.
As if she saw my embarrassment, the girl took my hand generously and led me out of the crowd.
Meena and I became friends just like that.
She excitedly told me about their Holi festival, which starts in February and March
every year. During this festival, people throw colored powder and water bombs at each other to offer their sincere wishes. She also told me the festival originated from a distant legend.
I was attracted by Meena, who glowed with self confidence, and lost interest in listening to her pious talk. From our conversation, I learned that she was a dancer who wanted everyone to recognize her dancing.
Meena often danced for me, and her dancing became my only solace in this faraway land. In return, I gave her a gold necklace.
I had made enough money and wanted to take her to my hometown with me. She has also received an offer from wealthy businessman Sulman Kapur to join his team of dancers, who perform regularly at various venues, which would make her dream come true.
I didn't know if me or her dreams were more important to her, but I had no intention of interfering with her choice.
I waited for her at the pier for three days and nights until the boatman gave me a final warning.
I never saw Meena again after that.
(There are more contents to be added later.)
It's all a lie! Everything is a lie!
I want my Meena back!
(The last page is filled with a lot of numbers and words that don't make sense.)
Life is meaningless.
Unable to make up our minds, we went separate ways.
I was torn apart, with the enemy surrounded from all directions.
I am so stunned that I feel I can't even take the weight of my own body.
These lines I have written cannot convey my heavy emotions.
Some sins are to be forgiven after all! I'm not supposed to be the one to take the blame.
No matter how much money I have, it is nothing in the face of power.
Alone I shall wander, abandon the one who abandoned me.
