At first, Siddhartha followed the lead of the monks and sat on the wall. He didn't rest day and night and rarely talked to people. He didn't say anything bad even when he toiled under the hottest sun. All he did was carve grooves with a chisel, but he did so because of his nature and not any order of Ashoka. In fact, he carved edicts by himself without asking for anyone's help for 20 years.
The last place anyone saw Siddhartha was in a dilapidated house in the mountains. Siddhartha no longer held a flat chisel. Instead, he held a Bell and Board and made slow and powerful sounds that sounded just like the ones he made when he was carving on the cliff.
