This is definitely a gamble. They have agreed on meeting at the landing site tomorrow, and sailing northwards back to Sitka.
Under the cover of night, I left the team and turned back. I swear I had never been so nervous in my short life. Despite the pain in my right leg, I kept running and running in the dark forest until I reached a slope under the moonlight. Then, a trace of sweetness
came out of my throat, and I collapsed to the ground, coughing so hard as if I was going to vomit my insides out. But I knew time was running out. If they found me missing, they would definitely come back for me.
Before I could even catch my breath, I dived into the slope, breaking the crust easily, fumbling inside the moist soil before finding a rope. After adjusting my position, I pulled out the buried wooden chest. And inside was a grey leather bag hidden among the delicate clay figures. I weighed it and carried it on my shoulder.
Before leaving, I scattered all the clay figures on the ground, hoping to confuse them
before they could find out which way I was going. I ran along the river all night. Exhausted and nervous, I ignored all the cuts from sharp branches and even began to hear things—voices calling my name from behind, and footsteps following me. Were they coming? Could it be that they have spotted me long ago, and were just trying to drive me crazy, like a bunch of predators playing with their prey?
They were the cats on the ship, and I was the rat in their paws...
Just when I was about to be consumed by the thoughts, twilight passed through the valley before my eyes, igniting the peaceful Red River. I rushed towards the twilight like a fish desperate for air. The gold on my shoulders feels nothing like a burden anymore, but like an empty bag hanging on my back...
