Most of the letters are badly damaged, but scholars of the academy are trying their best to restore them and fill in the unrecognizable parts based on the context. According to the donor, these letters were once exchanged between a famous local engraver and his children. It is said that the engraver even led the construction of the Mountain Peak Palace of Kashyapa I. Unfortunately, no detailed records have been found to prove this.
"These so-called techniques are nothing but imitation of rigid craftsmanship made by the incompetent. We both learned our techniques from our father, and even though you have gained some reputation on the island, that is not enough. Without proper talent, finding another occupation soon might be the better choice here.
...
Relying solely on experiences is a terrible mistake. It's like falling into a trap set up by yourself.
...
The transportation of stone materials is currently the biggest problem. If not for the delay caused by the officials, we could finish the palace 20 days earlier or more.
...
Now that the palace is nearly completed, the guards are tightening their watch. I'm afraid it will be hard for me to send letters. In just two or three months, I will finally be able to leave Sigiriya..."
One of the letters comes from someone other than the craftsmen, probably another person who worked on the palace. We have no idea why it is kept among the letters, but we will just record the text here:
"With devotion in mind, do all the best deeds. Never forget to help others, and kindness will always shine above like the sun."
